Program Description

$12M fund accelerating adoption of commercially-ready health technologies into Ontario's healthcare system via the Health Innovation Pathway. Four topics (wound care, AI vision screening, surgical navigation, abdominal wall supports) were announced with $500K-$5M envelopes in September 2025 and competed through time-limited calls to hospitals in 2026. Requires TRL 8+ and the relevant Health Canada clearance.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Companies, innovators, clinicians, health service providers
  • Technology at TRL 8+ (commercially ready, not prototype)
  • Relevant regulatory approvals (for example, Health Canada) already received where the technology requires them — a clear regulatory pathway is not an accepted substitute. Ontario Health's intake form treats TRL 8+ as the route for technologies that do not require Health Canada approval
  • Must demonstrate value to Ontario patients and health budget
  • Out of scope: pharma, vaccines, HIS, infrastructure
  • Made-in-Ontario preference

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about HTAF

Free
Can sole proprietors apply?
Yes — anyone can submit a technology proposal to the Health Innovation Pathway, including a sole proprietor, patient, or member of the public. But HTAF funding itself is committed to a health service provider (a hospital), not to the submitting company.
What's the realistic award size?
$500K–$5M per topic, shared across all participating sites. The first cohort funded 4 topics across that range out of a $12M pool — each figure is the TOTAL funding available for that topic, not a per-site or per-company amount.
How long to get funds after approval?
Ontario Health does not publish a payment schedule. Funds flow to the health service provider under a contribution agreement, with payment tied to deployment and outcome-reporting milestones rather than to the technology company directly.
Why do applications fail?
TRL below 8 where Health Canada clearance is not required (prototype not ready), no Health Canada clearance where it is required, or no Ontario integration plan.
Can I stack with other grants?
Ontario Health does not publish stacking rules for HTAF. Note that HTAF money is committed to the health service provider (hospital), not the company that would hold other awards like IRAP, SR&ED, FedDev, SIF or Mitacs.
