Program Description

Ontario grant supporting innovative training projects for employers and organizations, but the current application period is closed.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Ontario employers
  • Minister-approved non-college apprenticeship training delivery agents
  • Non-profits including Indigenous Band offices and ISET agreement holders
  • Professional, industry, or employer associations
  • Trade unions
  • Municipalities, DSSABs, CMSMs, and hospitals
  • Educational organizations may apply as co-applicants
  • Primary applicant must be a legal entity, authorized to operate or carry on business in Ontario, with a physical location and actively operating in Ontario
  • Primary applicant must comply with the Human Rights Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Standards Act, 2000, and the Building Opportunities in the Skilled Trades Act, 2021
  • Primary applicant must maintain and declare WSIB or private disability coverage, adequate third-party COMMERCIAL GENERAL liability insurance (at least $2,000,000 per occurrence, as advised by its insurance broker), and AUTO liability coverage where vehicles are used
  • A primary applicant may submit up to three applications per round, and each project and its activities must be substantively different
  • Where the project delivers Level 1 apprenticeship in-class training, the primary applicant must be, or partner with, a Minister-approved training delivery agent
  • Project partners and subcontractors must be Canadian, with limited exceptions where no Canadian company is available

How much money can a single SDF Training Stream project get?
The guide states there are no maximum or minimum funding amounts. It also says the ministry will first consider applications with a project budget greater than $150,000, and may choose to fund all or only a portion of the proposed project.
Can a for-profit Ontario employer apply, or only non-profits?
Employers in Ontario are the first category listed among eligible primary applicants, alongside non-profits, trade unions, associations, municipalities and hospitals. Colleges, universities, school boards and career colleges may only join as co-applicants.
Is the application period open right now?
No. Round 6 opened July 29, 2025 and closed October 1, 2025. The official page states the application period has closed and applicants will be notified. No Round 7 intake had been announced as of July 31, 2026.
How is a project actually scored?
Seven weighted criteria: Project Delivery Plan 20%; SDF objectives and focus areas 15%; in-demand sector 15%; project need 15%; organizational capacity 13%; budget 10%; demonstrated innovation 7%; and cost sharing 5%.
What reporting comes with the money?
Activity, final and financial reports against the KPIs in your Transfer Payment Agreement. Recipients of $150,000 or more must also hire a third-party auditor, whose report is typically due 60 days after project activities end. Payments may carry a 15% holdback until everything is fulfilled.
