How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

This is fundamentally a community storytelling contest, not a merit-based grant evaluation. The nomination that tells the most compelling 'making Canada stronger' story wins. Third-party nominations from customers, employees, or community members are often more credible than self-nominations because they demonstrate external validation. Two of five grants are reserved for Purolator customers — if you ship with Purolator, you compete in a smaller pool with significantly better odds. Start building public voting support early because community engagement influences finalist selection. Past winners include food producers, artisans, social enterprises, Indigenous businesses, mental health services, and sustainable product companies. Product businesses that ship physically align naturally with Purolator's brand. Mobilize your customer base and community to vote during the finalist stage.

Success Profile

Canadian small businesses (50 or fewer employees) with compelling community impact stories. Past winners include: Hello Leena (Toronto, mental health services for underserved communities), Schoolhouse Gluten-Free Gourmet (Mahone Bay NS, Maritime food producer), Elate Cosmetics (Victoria BC, vegan/cruelty-free beauty), First Indigenous Biomass Future (Kinuso AB, Indigenous forestry employment). Common threads: overcoming adversity, serving underserved communities, innovative products with social impact, and strong local roots. Product businesses that ship regularly align well with Purolator's brand. Businesses able to mobilize community voting support have a structural advantage.

Evaluation Criteria

Three-phase judging. Phase 1: AI software + third-party agency + Sponsor pre-screen all nominations. Phase 3: Final judging panel scores top candidates. Scoring weights: Quality of Content 35%, Impact/Business Model/Values 60%, Community Support 5%. Submissions eliminated if incomplete, off-theme, or lacking positive brand tone.
