Provides a matching grant of 50% of eligible storefront and façade improvement costs, up to $10,000 per building. Grants are first-come, first-served until the annual budget is depleted.
Eligibility Requirements
- The applicant must be the registered owner of the land, or an agent authorized by the registered owner
- The property must be located within a Community Improvement Project Area, meaning Downtown or Mitton Village
- Eligible buildings are commercial, institutional or mixed use
- A pre-application eligibility review must be completed before an application is submitted
- All City of Sarnia realty taxes must be paid in full before the grant is issued
- Improvements must not commence until the application is approved in full and an agreement is executed by both the registered owner and the City; retroactive improvements are not permitted
- An applicant may apply for more than one CIP grant program, with a separate application for each

How much does the grant pay?
A matching grant of 50% of the cost of eligible storefront and façade improvement and restoration works on commercial, institutional and mixed use buildings, up to a maximum of $10,000 per building.
Who can apply?
The registered owner of the land, or an agent authorized by the registered owner, for a property located within the Downtown or Mitton Village Community Improvement Project Areas.
What work is eligible?
Storefront repair or replacement, masonry and brickwork re-pointing, cornices, parapets and eaves, awnings and canopies, façade painting and cleaning, exterior and storefront display lighting, signage, architectural and design fees, barrier-free entrance modifications, fire protection systems, roof repair or replacement, structural repairs to walls, ceilings, floors and foundations, water and weatherproofing, windows and doors, plumbing and electrical extensions to create retail, office or residential space, required window openings to residential spaces, and heating and ventilation improvements.
Can I start work while my application is being reviewed?
No. Improvements must not commence until the application has been approved in full by the City and an agreement has been executed by both the registered owner and the City. Retroactivity for improvements made before approval is not permitted.
Is there a deadline?
No deadline is published. Grants are drawn from an annual budget set by Council and are distributed on a first come, first served basis until the budget allocation is depleted.
What do I have to submit?
An eligibility review must be completed before you apply. The application itself includes a site plan or professional design study and architectural drawings, a specification of the proposed works with a work plan and construction drawings, and at least two cost estimates for the eligible work from licensed contractors or consultants.
Can I combine this with another City grant?
Yes. An applicant may apply for more than one CIP grant program, though a separate application is required for each.
