How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipContact your regional Economic Development Officer before submitting anything — the EDO relationship is central to this program and pre-consultation is effectively required. EDOs can advise which costs qualify, whether sweat equity applies to your situation, and how to structure your project to maximize the funding draw over three years. Applicants in remote (Group 2) communities face a lower 20% equity requirement vs. 30% in urban centres, making the program more accessible outside Yellowknife/Hay River/Fort Smith/Inuvik.
Rejection Pitfalls 6
- Business revenues likely to exceed $50,000 (more appropriate for Entrepreneur Support program)
- Requested costs are ineligible (e.g., wages, debt repayment, ongoing operating costs)
- Applicant not a NWT resident
Success Profile
A NWT resident who is self-employed in a traditional economy activity (hunting/trapping/harvesting), licensed artist or crafter selling commercially, independent filmmaker, or small prospector. Revenues likely under $50,000/year. Has a specific equipment or materials need (not operating costs or wages). Has an established relationship or is willing to work with their regional EDO. Based in a remote community (Group 2) to benefit from the lower 20% equity requirement.
Evaluation Criteria
EDO assesses commercial viability, alignment with eligible SEED schedule, equity contribution (cash or sweat equity), applicant's NWT residency and disability documentation, and whether the project will create sustainable income for the applicant.

Clawback Risk
Low RiskLow — repayment is required if funds are misused, but EDO oversight and incremental draw structure reduce risk of over-draw.
