How to Win
Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like
Insider TipThe TCS is massively underutilized by Canadian SMEs — many companies don't realize these services are free and available to any exporter. Your local TCS officer is your single best resource for navigating Canada's export support ecosystem. Build a relationship with them BEFORE you need specific help. A TCS officer's letter of support significantly strengthens CanExport SME applications. When requesting in-market help from trade commissioners abroad, be specific: name the companies you want introductions to, the trade shows you're attending, and the regulatory questions you need answered. Vague 'I want to explore the German market' requests get lower priority than 'I'm attending Hannover Messe in April and need introductions to 3 specific distributors.' The TCS has sector specialists — ask for the officer who covers your specific industry in your target market. Finally, register for MyTCS to receive personalized market alerts and event invitations; many valuable trade missions are promoted only through the MyTCS platform.
Rejection Pitfalls 5
- Company is seeking to import products INTO Canada (TCS serves exporters only)
- Company is not Canadian (foreign companies cannot access TCS advisory services)
- Business has no viable product or service for export (purely conceptual or pre-product)
Success Profile
Any Canadian company with an exportable product or service that is ready to enter or expand in international markets. No minimum size, revenue, or stage requirement. Best served companies include: (1) first-time exporters who need market intelligence and hand-holding, (2) experienced exporters entering a new geographic market who need local contacts and regulatory guidance, (3) companies attending international trade shows who want facilitated B2B meetings, (4) companies facing market access barriers or trade disputes abroad. The TCS serves companies of all sizes from 1-person startups to large enterprises, though SMEs get the most relative value from the service.
Evaluation Criteria
No competitive evaluation. TCS serves any Canadian company that is incorporated, export-ready or export-potential, and not solely an importer. Depth of engagement may be prioritized based on the commercial potential of the export opportunity and alignment with Government of Canada trade priorities and target markets.
