Program Description
Non-repayable seed funding of up to $20,000, matched by the business, for early stage southern Ontario companies developing green products, services or processes, or redesigning existing ones to cut their environmental impact. Participants also get up to 30 hours of fully funded expert support and a University of Guelph online certificate place. Delivered by six Regional Innovation Centres and funded by FedDev Ontario.

- Early-stage business or SME with 1–499 employees.
- Headquartered in Southern Ontario.
- Incorporated in Ontario or federally.
- Founder or owner working full-time in the business.
- Scalable product or service.
- One or two leadership team members available to participate in an online University of Guelph certificate program.
- Commitment to developing or redesigning green or circular-economy products, services, processes or technologies.
- Non-repayable seed funding up to $20,000 per selected business; matching funds required.
- Up to 30 hours of fully funded targeted support from business leaders.

Who funds the i.d.e.a. Fund and who delivers it?
It is funded by the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario), and delivered in partnership with six Ontario Regional Innovation Centres: Boundless Accelerator, Innovate Niagara, Innovation Factory, Launch Lab, TechAlliance of Southwestern Ontario and WEtech Alliance.
How much funding is available?
Each Regional Innovation Centre distributes up to a maximum of $20,000 in matching seed funding to selected businesses. The funding is non repayable and comes with up to 30 hours of fully funded, targeted support from business leaders.
Who can apply?
An early stage business or SME of 1 to 499 employees, headquartered in southern Ontario, incorporated provincially or federally, with the owner or founder working in the business full time and a scalable product or service. One or two members of the leadership team must be available to take part in the program and in an online certificate program with the University of Guelph.
What kind of project does the fund back?
The fund accepts high potential businesses that commit to developing new green products, services, processes and technologies, or redesigning existing products, services, processes and technologies to reduce their environmental impacts. Businesses come from various sectors rather than one.
What support comes with the money?
Up to 30 hours of fully funded expert support covering growth plans and strategies, talent attraction, raising follow on investment, market diversification, product development, quantification of product benefits, market value propositions and commercialization of intellectual property, plus one to one time with TechAlliance Startup Advisors for application know how.
How many businesses get in?
In Cohort 4, 75 companies were selected across southern Ontario for non repayable contributions of up to $1,485,000, 13 of them through TechAlliance. The fund has supported nearly 390 businesses since its inception in 2022.
