How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

HCI is the primary draw — free $12M hardware lab with zero equity. Genuinely rare in Canada. EIF is only cash program but very narrow (agri-tech/clean-tech, York Region, 7 spots, matching). For software/AI without hardware, Accelerated Growth is accessible but no cash. Apply early — HCI typically opens mid-year.

Success Profile

For HCI: hardware/semiconductor startup, Canada incorporated, 2+ co-founders, <5 years, <$5M revenue, novel electronics, customer validation, Southern Ontario presence. For EIF: agri-tech/clean-tech in York Region with MVP and matching funds.

Premium See what successful applicants for this program actually look like.

Evaluation Criteria

HCI: technical novelty and hardware/semiconductor innovation; team depth (2+ co-founders required); commercialization potential and IP strategy; customer validation evidence; commitment to Southern Ontario presence. EIF Stream 2: project viability; industry fit (agri-tech/clean-tech); York Region location; matching fund availability.

Application Steps

1 Monitor Application Window HCI applications typically open mid-year (May–June). Sign up for ventureLAB newsletter at venturelab.ca or contact [email protected] to be notified when Cohort 10 opens. Applications are competitive and time-bounded.
2 Online Application Submission Submit via venturelab.ca. Required: company overview, description of hardware/semiconductor innovation, technical product details, team profiles (2+ co-founders for HCI), customer validation evidence, and Canadian incorporation documents.
3 Screening Review ventureLAB staff screen applications for eligibility: hardware/semiconductor focus, <99 employees, <5 years old (HCI), Canadian incorporation. Software-only companies are screened out at this stage.
4 Panel Presentation Shortlisted companies present to a ventureLAB selection panel. Expect a 15–20 minute pitch followed by Q&A covering technical innovation, IP potential, and commercialization roadmap.
5 Cohort Acceptance and Bootcamp Accepted companies enter a 2-month HCI Bootcamp to build foundational relationships with ventureLAB team and partners. Following bootcamp, full 24-month program access begins including $12M lab access.

$10,000 cash (7 awards total), but requires 1:1 matching funds. Must be in agri-tech/clean-tech, York Region, with MVP.
Do I need to be incorporated in Canada for HCI?
Yes. Non-Canadian incorporated startups are ineligible. Must be a Canadian corporation for all programs.
Can I stack EIF with IRAP?
Yes. ventureLAB has IRAP delivery partnerships. EIF cash + IRAP can be combined for hardware development.
What happens if I don't have matching funds for EIF?
