Program Description

Alberta's Self-employment Program gives unemployed and under-employed adult Albertans who want to start a business free, full-time training: instructor-led business training, guidance in writing a business plan, and one-to-one business counselling and coaching while they launch. It is not a grant to the business. Participants who need money for living costs while in training may be eligible for financial assistance paid to them personally, depending on their circumstances, and the program's guidelines say that money is not meant for start-up costs or investment in the business. You apply by contacting a provider near you, who checks your eligibility.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Unemployed, or under-employed: working on average less than 20 hours a week over the last 12 weeks
  • 18 or older and a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person, with a valid Social Insurance Number
  • Living in Alberta with an Alberta address, or at any address in Lloydminster, for the length of the training
  • Seeking to start a business for self-employment; Alberta's guidelines also accept an existing business, or taking over one you did not previously own
  • Owning at least 51% of the business, which must run full time (at least 30 hours a week), be located and operating in Alberta, and be registered
  • Committing to full-time training (at least 25 hours a week) and found suitable in the provider's employability assessment and business viability assessment
  • Not in an education program under the Education Act in the past 12 months, and no training funded by Alberta Labour and Immigration in the past 48 months
  • Anyone with a job they want to leave to attend must be approved through a Counsel to Leave Employment assessment before quitting, and regular EI recipients must be approved before training starts

Participants who need funding for their living costs while in training may be eligible for financial assistance paid to them as individuals, depending on their circumstances; Alberta's program guidelines direct them to Foundational Learning Assistance, which is assessed on household financial need. That money is not intended to cover business start-up costs or investment in the business, and the program page publishes no dollar figure for it.
