Program Description

Alterna Savings provides multiple microfinance loan segments for underserved Ontario entrepreneurs, with amounts ranging from $1,000 to $25,000 and a BDC joint-loan option that can bring total financing to $50,000.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Legal resident of Canada, at least 18 years old
  • Work and live in Alterna's service area in Ontario
  • Operate a legal seasonal, part-time or full-time business (all segments except the Success Accelerator training loan)
  • Income Builder Loan: entering self-employment with personal income or assets under $30,000
  • Success Accelerator Professional Development Loan: accepted into a short-term program of two years or less involving accredited fees such as exams and licensing, certification, or tools of the trade; unable to obtain credit from traditional financial institutions due to lack of credit or employment; minimal income; the program must lead directly to employment
  • Skilled Professionals and Trades Loan: entering self-employment with income of $50,000 or under
  • Social Impact Entrepreneurship Loan, for-profit applicants: must be generating revenue
  • Social Impact Entrepreneurship Loan, nonprofit and co-operative organizations: operate in Alterna's service area, provide sponsor support from an organization if the parent organization or social enterprise is not incorporated (the sponsor takes the loan on their behalf), and a letter recording a board motion endorsing the application
  • Working Women Business Loan: self-employed with minimal income, 51% women-owned, generating revenue, income under $50,000
  • BDC Joint Loan Program: available to applicants approved for up to $25,000 with Alterna. Eligible groups are Black entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs, women entrepreneurs, racialized Canadians, young entrepreneurs aged 18 to 39, 2SLGBTQI+ community members and entrepreneurs with a disability
