Program Description
Funding for First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals and organizations for arts and culture activities across travel, small-scale activities, short-term projects, long-term projects, and Indigenous organizations.
Eligibility Requirements
- First Nations, Inuit or Métis individuals, groups, collectives, and Indigenous-led organizations (both not-for-profit and for-profit)
- Activities must be Indigenous-led
- Collaborations with non-Indigenous artists or organizations are allowed if the project remains Indigenous-led
- The Indigenous Organizations stream is the only stream restricted to organizations; all other streams are open to individuals and groups as well
- Applicants must have a validated applicant profile and meet the eligibility criteria set out in that profile
- Individuals and groups typically demonstrate past learning or training, past compensation for arts activities, a commitment to a career in the arts, and recognition by other artists or arts workers
- Organizations typically demonstrate incorporation as a non-profit organization, an arts-related mandate, a history of arts activities, and a history of paying professional fees and royalties to artists and arts workers
- The Council does not fund commercial projects in cultural industries such as comedy, music, film, television and video games, and funds only a limited number of for-profit artistic organizations (for example literary publishers, record labels and arts management services)
- Applicants must be 18 years of age or older
- Customary and contemporary Indigenous practices are eligible activities — including Pow Wow, Métis jigging and traditional competitions, and cultural practices such as fashion design, body art and culinary arts
- In media arts and in digital arts and new media, only the creator or director may apply; producers and production companies cannot apply on behalf of a creative project, and the work must be independent of the commercial film, television and video game industries
- Each funding opportunity sets its own eligible applicants, activities and expenses, published on the Council's portal

Per-stream maximums appear only on the Grant Fact Sheet inside the client portal. In 2023-24 the Council awarded $17.8 million across 341 successful applications: $8.7M to 74 arts organizations, $2.0M to 39 groups and $7.1M to 228 artists.
How long until I hear back?
Usually within 3 months of submitting a Travel or Small-Scale Activities application, within 4 months of the Short-Term Projects deadline, and within 5 months of the Long-Term Projects deadline. The Indigenous Organizations timeline is to be confirmed.
Who decides, and are first-time applicants at a disadvantage?
An external peer committee scores and ranks applications; a program officer and director then set amounts. In 2023-24, 120 of the recipients were first-time grant recipients.
