How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Premium
Insider Tip

With a 17% approval rate, this is a competitive fund — but applying with FACTOR/Musicaction approval effectively eliminates the competition and allows year-round submission. If you are eligible for FACTOR, apply there first and use that approval as your Creative Saskatchewan fast-track. Recording and mixing MUST happen in Saskatchewan — mastering can be done anywhere, but the core recording sessions must be in-province. Musician fees are capped at FACTOR rates ($400/track per musician) and in-house producer fees at $500/track — budget carefully. Creative Saskatchewan advisors offer free pre-application consultations; use these to refine your budget and confirm eligible expenses before submitting.

Success Profile

Saskatchewan-based musicians and bands with a professional track record — prior commercial releases, active streaming presence, touring history, or FACTOR funding — who are ready to record a commercially viable EP or full-length album. Artists who record with established Saskatchewan producers and studios, have a clear distribution and release strategy, and can demonstrate audience development are strongest candidates.

Premium See what successful applicants for this program actually look like.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are evaluated on commercial viability and market potential, artistic quality of submitted demos/prior work, professional readiness of the recording plan, clarity of distribution and release strategy, and the applicant's track record. FACTOR/Musicaction-approved applications are fast-tracked and bypass standard competitive assessment. Applications from artists who have demonstrated audience development and prior release activity score highest.
