How to Win

Insider tips, common pitfalls, and what successful applicants look like

Insider Tip

Register for a FACTOR profile early — your rating determines which programs you can access. Artist Development ($5K at 75% cost-share) is the right entry point for emerging artists. Don't apply to multiple juried programs in the same fiscal year. Stack with provincial music programs (Ontario Creates, Creative BC Music Fund).

Success Profile

Emerging to mid-career Canadian artist with at least one commercially released track and active FACTOR profile. Labels with rated company profiles have highest success rates in Juried programs.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications are evaluated by an independent jury. For Juried programs (Sound Recording, Live Performance, Video), the jury assesses: quality of assessment tracks, market activity and momentum, clarity and achievability of the marketing/release plan given the artist's resources and track record, and commercial potential. For Artist Development, evaluation considers the development plan and the artist's growth trajectory. Artist Profile rating is a prerequisite — higher ratings unlock higher-value programs.

Application Steps

1 Create a User Profile on FACTOR Portal Sign up at portal.factor.ca. Each band member needs a separate user profile. This is your login identity for all FACTOR interactions.
2 Create and Get Your Artist Profile Rated Build your Artist Profile with genre, discography, streaming stats, and audience metrics. FACTOR assigns a rating (General, 1, 2, 3, or Platinum Album Certified) that determines which programs you can access. Higher ratings unlock higher-value programs.
3 Create an Applicant Profile Establish the individual or business entity that will contract with FACTOR if funded. This is the legal entity that receives the money.
