Program Description
Startup financing program specifically for newcomers to Canada ages 18-39. Provides up to $25,000 in equity-free loans ($12,500 from Futurpreneur + $12,500 from BDC) plus up to two years of mentorship and business resources.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, physically residing in Canada
- Must have lived in Canada for less than 60 months as of the application processing date
- Must be between 18 and 39 years of age
- Must have limited or no established credit history in Canada
- Must have a social insurance number (SIN) that does not begin with a '9' (temporary residents are ineligible)
- Must provide two character-based references, at least one from a Canadian citizen
- Business must not yet be operational, or have been operating full time for 24 months or less
- Business must be registered and operate in Canada, with revenues deposited to a Canadian business bank account and subject to Canadian taxes
- Must have a viable business idea or early-stage business
- Loan only (up to $25,000 - fully repayable, equity-free)
- Mentorship support included for up to two years alongside financing
- BDC expects a minimum personal investment, typically 10% of all borrowed funds.
- Business must be past the idea or R&D phase — either pre-startup (launching, first sales expected within months) or startup (under a year of significant sales).
- Applicant(s) must represent more than 50% controlling ownership of the applicant business.
