Program Description

An innovation supercluster that co-invests in projects to grow Canada's plant-based protein and value-added agri-food sector, fostering collaboration from farm to fork.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a business, research institution, or organization in the plant protein or value-added agri-food sector in Canada
  • Technology Leadership projects must be collaborative: a consortium of at least 2 PIC members (ideally 3 or more), including at least 1 SME. The Strengthening the Canadian Supply Chain Program takes applications from a single Canadian-owned company.
  • Must demonstrate relevance to growing Canada's plant protein industry or agri-food value chain
  • Investment Vouchers available for smaller organizations ($37,500–$250,000) with lighter application requirements
  • Larger projects require demonstrated innovation and measurable commercial impact
  • Must contribute private sector cost-share matching alongside Protein Industries Canada funding
  • Supply Chain Program: applicants must be Canadian-owned companies with at least $100,000 in sales in the previous fiscal year (SMEs get priority); each company may apply for one project; the project must commit to having IP outcomes owned in Canada; maximum project length is 12 months
  • AI stream: projects must have at least one partner with demonstrable experience deploying AI technology; the governing AI guide requires a minimum of one PIC member with partners (at least one an SME), though PIC's AI programme page describes consortia of two or more partner companies — confirm consortium size with PIC on the introductory call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about Protein Industries Canada Supercluster

Free
Can sole proprietors apply for PIC projects?
Not for Technology Leadership, which needs a consortium of at least 2 PIC members including at least 1 SME. The Strengthening the Canadian Supply Chain Program takes applications from a single Canadian-owned company with at least $100,000 in sales in the previous fiscal year.
What's the typical PIC co-investment for a Technology Leadership project?
$1M-$4M PIC share (up to 45% of total project costs). Total project values typically range $2M-$8M with 55% private cost-share required.
How long does PIC take to review an EOI?
Continuous intake streams are reviewed on an ongoing basis, but expect 4-8 weeks for initial feedback after submission. Fermentation stream has a fixed deadline (May 31, 2026).
Why do most applications get rejected?
Most rejections are due to missing consortium partners (no SME), not using Canadian feedstocks, or insufficient private cost-share (needs 55% minimum).
Can I stack PIC with other grants?
Yes, PIC is compatible with NRC-IRAP, FedDev Ontario, ACOA, and SR&ED tax credits (but cannot double-count costs). Use the Supply Chain Program ($37.5K-$150K) as a stepping stone.
