Atlantic Canada's principal Aboriginal Financial Institution (AFI), operating since 1985, offering a tiered suite of developmental business loans to First Nations, Métis and Inuit entrepreneurs across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland & Labrador. Three loan streams: micro-loans up to $5,000 (9.25% interest, up to 2 years); Women & Youth loans up to $25,000 (8% interest, up to 5 years); and General lending up to $750,000 for individuals or $1.5 million for communities (up to 20-year terms). All streams are paired with complimentary business planning, training, and mentoring from Ulnooweg's team.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must self-identify as Status or Non-status First Nations, Métis, or Inuit
  • Applicant must live and operate their business within Atlantic Canada (NS, NB, PE, or NL)
  • A cash equity contribution of approximately 5% is recommended for most loans (not mandatory for all streams)
  • Business must be viable and have a sound business plan — Ulnooweg provides planning support
  • Women & Youth stream: applicant must identify as a woman or be aged 35 or under
  • General lending stream: communities/organizations must be Indigenous-led
