Program Description

WorkBC Self-Employment Services are for British Columbians who are out of work, or in unstable work, and want to start their own business. Through a WorkBC Centre you get free help building a business plan, business skills training, and mentoring and coaching from business advisors. WorkBC says potential funding or financial support toward startup costs and other expenses while you launch may be available, but it publishes no amount, no terms and no word on who is paid: this is a service for you as a WorkBC client, not a published business grant. You get in through a WorkBC Centre, where staff review your situation to determine your eligibility.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be legally allowed to work in British Columbia
  • Be unemployed, or underemployed, or living with a disability, or employed or self-employed in a job that is unlikely to continue long-term with irregular or unstable hours, or that has low and unreliable income
  • Temporary residents: eligibility depends on your immigration status and supporting documentation
  • Want to start and run your own business: the service covers business planning, business skills training and mentoring while you launch
  • Access is through a WorkBC Centre; staff review your situation to determine your eligibility
  • The WorkBC Centre delivering the service can add its own conditions, for example around Employment Insurance history or a business that is already running, so confirm before you plan around it

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about WorkBC Self-Employment Services

Free
Does WorkBC Self-Employment Services pay money to start a business?
Possibly. WorkBC says potential funding toward startup costs and other expenses while you launch may be available, but it publishes no amount or cap. The dependable part is free: business-plan development, business skills training, and mentoring and coaching from business advisors.
Who can use WorkBC Self-Employment Services?
People legally allowed to work in B.C. who are unemployed, underemployed, living with a disability, or in work that is unstable or pays too little. Eligibility for temporary residents depends on immigration status and documents. WorkBC Centre staff review each situation.
Is this a grant for my business?
Not as WorkBC describes it. It is a service you use as a WorkBC client, delivered through a WorkBC Centre. WorkBC says potential funding toward startup costs and other expenses while you launch may be available, but it publishes no amount, terms or recipient, so there is no published business grant.
How do I apply for WorkBC Self-Employment Services?
Complete an Online Employment Services application at apply.workbc.ca, or visit your nearest WorkBC Centre, where staff can complete it with you. Tell them that starting a business is your goal.
Can I use a WorkBC wage subsidy while I am in the program?
No. WorkBC's wage subsidy rules exclude an employer who is an active WorkBC client participating in Self-Employment Services, so a subsidized hire has to wait until you have finished the service.
