Program Description

Ontario grants of generally up to $50,000 per project (up to $100,000 for high-impact projects) for community-led work that protects or restores the Great Lakes, their connecting rivers and watersheds. Incorporated community organizations, conservation groups, Indigenous communities, conservation authorities, municipalities, schools and academic institutions, and industry and non-profit associations can apply; businesses can take part only as partners. Round 4 has $1.8 million; applications close November 6, 2026 at 2 p.m. through Transfer Payment Ontario, for projects in 2027.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicant must be a legal incorporated entity, such as a community-based incorporated organization, a conservation organization (non-governmental, not-for-profit or charitable corporation focused on environmental protection, conservation or restoration), an Indigenous community, a conservation authority or its foundation, a municipal government, an academic institution (schools through their school boards, universities, colleges), or an industry or non-profit association
  • Municipalities and conservation authorities (and their foundations) must partner with at least one community-based organization or Indigenous community and include a signed letter setting out its role
  • The organization that oversees and is responsible for implementing the project must be the applicant
  • Project must support at least one objective: nature-based outcomes, community innovation, or economic resilience tied to Great Lakes protection and restoration
  • Project must engage community members in implementation and include direct actions for Great Lakes protection, restoration, water quality, climate resilience or stewardship
  • Project must start no earlier than January 1, 2027 and be completed by December 31, 2027
  • Ineligible projects include education-only projects, feasibility studies and plans, contaminated site remediation, work in Provincial Parks, beautification only, land acquisition, legally required compliance work, and projects needing an environmental assessment not yet completed
