Program Description

Grants of up to $75,000, covering at most 90% of the eligible budget, for wholly owned First Nation development corporations in the Northern Development region to hire a consultant or an incremental position that helps the nation negotiate, diversify into or capitalize on a large economic development project in its territory. Applications are reviewed first come, first served until June 30, 2027 or until funds run out, and projects must finish within 12 months and by February 28, 2028.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Wholly owned First Nation development corporation within the Northern Development Initiative Trust region
  • The applicant must be the entity within the nation responsible for economic development (creating job opportunities and revenue)
  • Must demonstrate an immediate large-scale economic development project occurring in the area, the opportunity the nation is targeting, and the specialized capacity to be provided by an external consultant or an incremental position
  • Must show how the project will increase employment opportunities for the region
  • At least 10% of the eligible budget must come from other contributions (applicant cash, third-party cash, or other grants); if provincial funding is received, this program's contribution must be less than the provincial contribution
  • Project must be completed within 12 months and before February 28, 2028
  • Regular or day-to-day economic development work is not eligible
