Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the questions founders most often ask about VERGE Breakthrough Fund II (formerly Pilla...

Free
Can I apply if I'm a sole proprietor?
VERGE funds enterprises of any organization structure — for-profit business or non-profit organization — so incorporation is not stated as a requirement. What is required: location in Southwestern Ontario, a genuine social mission, at least 1-2 years of operating history, current revenue with existing customers (or secured assets), full-time experienced management, and repayment capacity.
What's the typical loan amount?
Typical social enterprise loans run up to $100,000. VERGE's published annual totals work out to roughly $70,000–$170,000 per approval across its two funds (VERGE publishes no median). Large-scale community infrastructure loans secured against the assets can go up to $500,000. No minimum is published.
How long does approval take?
2–6 months total (inquiry to disbursement). Rolling intake means no fixed deadlines — applications reviewed as they're received.
Why do most applications get rejected?
Lack of a genuine social mission (purely commercial ventures), location outside Southwestern Ontario, too little operating history, no current revenue or secured assets, or no clear repayment plan.
What interest rate and term should I expect?
Loans are typically fixed rate with repayments of principal and interest. The interest rate, repayment terms, application fees and security are all determined on a case-by-case basis — VERGE publishes no standard rate or term.
